Resumo

The present study, reported as a full paper, aimed to investigate the state of the art regarding the relationship between leadership development programs and the creation and enhancement of social capital in organizations, based on an integrative review. We initially identified 105 articles that became 18 after applying the exclusion criteria. Although the older articles have an interest in discussing the relationship between human and social capital, there is a consensus that current models are integrative: human capital is understood as a premise for social capital to flourish. Yet, it is possible to build an understanding that social capital in organizations works as a kind of mediator between leadership development programs and effective business outcomes. Additionally, three different levels of social capital were identified, which generate different contributions to the business. Adjusting the design of leadership development programs to develop the desired level of social capital is a challenge for organizations. The network approach to understanding this relationship is more recent and promising, presenting a vast field of research ahead.
