Abstract

Designers work on solutions to the problems that cities present in order to create a bond between people and artefacts. When these professionals apply their knowledge of sustainability in the development of their products, the society benefits, therefore, their city will be developing based on knowledge. The KBUD (Knowledge-Based Urban Development) Perspective of Sustainable Development aims to promote the conservation and integration of natural and built environments. Knowledge-based development is the transformation of knowledge resources into local development providing the basis for sustainable development. In this way, the designer plays a crucial role in the development of a sustainable city. The purpose of this article is to understand the role of product and service designers in knowledge-based sustainable urban development. The research approach is qualitative-interpretative. The data collection was through in-depth interviews with 8 designers working with sustainable practices in their jobs. To analyze the data, we used the thematic analysis technique, which identified 12 categories of analysis, ranging from sustainable knowledge and attitudes, through natural resources, innovation, and even government policies. The study found that the designer plays an important role in the development of sustainable products and services. Finally, it was possible to understand that the designer is a professional that can contribute to the process of change, both within the companies using their knowledge to involve the entire production chain and in proposing sustainable solutions.
