ABSORPTIVE CAPACITY AND INNOVATION IN TECHNOLOGY COMPANIES IN SANTA CATARINA

Abstract

This paper aims to analyse the routines used by ICT firms from Santa Catarina state, for improving absorptive capacity. The study is qualitative, and it uses study case technique for analysing 11 ICT firms. Data was collected using interviews, observation and document analysis. The instrument for data collection was developed based on Zahra and George (2002). The results evidenced some absorptive capacity’ practices that are supporting innovation development in those firms, some of them are: to adapt external knowledge and new technologies for delivering a new product. To develop the ability of apply internal and external knowledge for delivering new patents or innovative software. The study also identified differences in routines and the level of maturity for absorptive capacity between the analysed firms, the older ones tend to use more routines implemented in their processes od innovation. Then, the study bring suggestions about how to allocate resources for a more efficient use of external knowledge to inovate.
