DISTANCE EDUCATION: ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGIES FOR THE INCLUSION OF VISUALLY IMPAIRED
Keywords:
Assistive Technology, Distance Education, W3C, Visual ImpairmentAbstract
This article reports on studies focused on Distance Education, which discuss the use of
Assistive Technologies (ATs) to minimize barriers in educational contexts involving students with
visual impairment. The method used was a bibliographic review, conducting a systematic research.
Six dissertations retrieved from the Catalog of Theses & Dissertations - CAPES database were
analyzed. The results suggest that the use of ATs has significant potential to improve the learning
of students with visual impairment in distance learning, but this potential depends on a series of
factors, from overcoming obstacles such as the lack of adequate resources to the requirement of
qualified professionals who enable the construction of Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) in
accordance with the accessibility guidelines of WCAG 2.0, established by the World Wide Web
Consortium (W3C).
