A Conceptual Model for Human-Compatible AI aligned with Sustainable Development Goals as a Catalyst for Organizational Transformation in the Twin Transition

The convergence of digitalization and sustainability — framed as the Twin Transition — poses complex demands on organizations. While Artificial Intelligence (AI) is considered a key driver of this transformation, its alignment with human values and normative goals remains undertheorized.
This paper proposes a conceptual model positioning Human-Compatible AI (HCAI) — a paradigm of value-aligned and uncertainty-aware AI — as a mediating mechanism for Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG)- and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)-oriented transformation.
Grounded in the SDGs, ESG criteria and recent policy developments (e.g. the EU AI Act) as normative layers, the model links key input factors such as technological infrastructure, organizational maturity, stakeholder expectations and regulatory ESG pressures to sustainability outcomes including resilience, SDG integration, and cultural transformation.
The model is structured in layers that connect these inputs with four central HCAI mechanisms: adaptive goal modeling, participatory decision-making, ethical alignment, and accountability. These mechanisms are discussed as enabling structures for sustainable, AI-enabled organizational change.
The paper follows a conceptual-theoretical design and sets the foundation for future empirical validation via mixed-methods research, combining qualitative theory building (e.g. Gioia methodology) with quantitative empirical studies in living labs.
The proposed model contributes to emerging discourses on responsible and sustainable AI by bridging ethical AI design, digital transformation and sustainability governance by offering a pathway to align advanced AI systems with global transformation goals.
