Knowns and Unknowns: Probing Supply Chain Sustainability in the AI Era
Keywords:
Sustainable supply chain management (SSCM), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Supply Chain (SC), Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Industry 5.0Abstract
This study investigates the impact of AI on SC sustainability across the triple bottom line (TBL) dimensions, using the PRISMA. It explores both the benefits and challenges of AI integration at various SC stages and how AI, in combination with other technologies, can enhance sustainable outcomes across diverse sectors such as food, agriculture, smart cities, clothing, and waste management. The research highlights a significant gap in existing literature, offering valuable insights for future studies and policy development within the evolving field of SSCM.
Rapid digitization and the rise of Industry 5.0 have transformed supply chain management (SCM), shifting it toward decentralized, data-driven systems powered by technologies like AI, IoT, Blockchain, and big data analytics. These innovations enhance transparency, efficiency, real-time monitoring, and sustainability, particularly in emerging economies, but also present challenges such as high implementation costs, integration difficulties, data security concerns, ethical issues, and environmental impact. Under the Sustainable Supply Chain Management (SSCM) framework and guided by the TBL and the UN’s SDGs, modern supply chains are evolving into complex global networks that seek to balance economic, social, and environmental goals. Industry 5.0 technologies, especially AI, serve as agility tools for leaner and more resilient supply chains; however, AI's true potential is best realized when integrated with other technologies. As AI continues to advance, its role—whether used independently or in combination—raises critical questions about its contribution to sustainability and the long-term success of circular strategies, especially in developing regions where clear goal-setting, policy alignment, and ethical implementation are essential.
