Abstract

In complex sociotechnical systems (STS), resilience is fundamental to operational safety, and knowledge is an essential resource for resilience. However, artifacts that explore and qualify knowledge to strengthen resilience in these systems remain scarce. This research proposes a method to analyze knowledge flow (KF) in STS, aiming to qualify critical knowledge and contribute to resilience. This qualification occurs through knowledge flow analysis. The method consists of four stages: (1) identification and mapping of critical knowledge and KF elements; (2) visual representation of KF; (3) evaluation of KF quality; and (4) improvement recommendations based on knowledge management processes. The adopted methodology was Design Science Research (DSR), with the method instantiated in four STS contexts: sanitation, electric power, risk and disaster management, and oil exploration and production. The results demonstrate that the proposed method is effective in identifying and qualifying necessary knowledge, contributing to resilient capabilities and organizational learning. The application highlighted the importance of mapping knowledge flow to identify gaps and opportunities for improvement in knowledge management. It is concluded that knowledge flow analysis is a promising approach for strengthening resilience in STS, while also pointing to opportunities for future research on the relationship between critical knowledge and resilient capabilities.
