The need to reduce carbon emissions to mitigate climate risk is a reality and demands urgent changes in energy production and consumption. Collaboration between sectors has proven to be a successful path to accelerate sustainability transitions. This study examines the characteristics of collaborations between Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and several sectors in European Union (E27) countries in the areas of green and digital transition. Utilizing a systematic literature review (SLR) combined with correlational research methods and bibliometric analysis, the study explores collaboration dynamics across industry, commerce, services, government, and NGOs. A rigorous SLR process, conducted using the SCOPUS and Web of Science (WoS) databases, ensures methodological precision through explicit inclusion and exclusion criteria, resulting in a robust dataset for analysis. The approach reviews a significant set of theories and their interactions with HEIs. The study also categorizes collaborations by country to identify trends and best practices. The research is under development, and preliminary findings reveal the importance of policy support and stakeholder interaction to accelerate collaborations that improve innovation and support energy transition. Limitations of this ongoing research include geopolitical issues in which energy plays a central and strategic role.
