Abstract

Decarbonizing the economic sectors remains one of the most significant challenges for contemporary society. Renewable energy sources (RES) like solar photovoltaic (PV), as an increasingly accessible source, play a central role in advancing low-carbon production and consumption. Alongside technological innovations such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and Digital Twins (DT), new systems such as Energy-as-a-Service (EaaS), Solar-as-a-Service (SaaS), and Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) are reshaping the energy landscape. These developments require dynamic interaction among operators, prosumers, customers, utilities, regulators, and investors. This study applies the PRISMA guideline to conduct a systematic literature review (SLR) focused on identifying key strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) related to solar energy production within the 27 EU member states. Although results are still under development, the review aims to highlight critical drivers and barriers that influence solar energy market diffusion. Preliminary insights suggest a complex interplay between policy frameworks, technological maturity, market incentives, business models, and user engagement. This approach will ultimately support the formulation of effective strategies for accelerating the energy transition. Limitations of this ongoing research include data heterogeneity and geopolitical issues in which energy plays a central and strategic role.
