Development and Validation of a Sustainability Perception instrument for Sharing Economy Platforms
Keywords:
Sharing Economy, Sustainability, Instrument ValidationAbstract
Context: The relationship between the Sharing Economy (SE) and sustainability is frequently claimed but lacks empirical measurement, partly due to conceptual ambiguity and a scarcity of validated tools. Objective: This article addresses this gap by presenting the development and rigorous content validation of an instrument designed to assess the alignment of SE platforms with sustainability-oriented principles. Method: Based on the theoretical framework of Curtis & Lehner (2019), an 11-item questionnaire was developed. Content validity was assessed by a panel of six expert judges (doctors and researchers in the SE field) using the Content Validity Index (CVI). Both quantitative (CVI per item and overall CVI for the scale) and qualitative analyses were performed. Results: The instrument demonstrated excellent content validity, achieving an overall CVI of 0.95, well above the established threshold. While most items were retained, four were revised based on expert feedback to enhance clarity and measurement precision. A key structural change involved splitting a single sustainability perception item into three distinct questions (environmental, social, and economic), improving the construct's measurement. Conclusion/Contribution: The study delivers a content-validated instrument, grounded in theory and ready for empirical application. It represents a fundamental step in moving the SE discourse from conceptual debate to empirical assessment, providing a valuable tool for researchers and practitioners.
