This study investigates the adoption of knowledge sharing practices in Brazilian federal universities, aiming to understand how these institutions address the challenges of knowledge management in public higher education. The study examines how these institutions implement KM processes. The research employed a systematic literature review using databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, and SciELO, combined with a multiple case study in three federal universities. Primary data collection involved a questionnaire administered to staff members and the analysis of institutional documents. The results revealed that the investigated universities face challenges in implementing knowledge sharing practices, particularly regarding knowledge externalization and combination. A tendency toward knowledge socialization in informal communities of practice was identified, though with limited systematization and integration into institutional processes. The research contributes to the literature by providing an analysis of KM processes in Brazilian federal universities, highlighting both barriers and enablers for the adoption of knowledge sharing practices. The findings suggest the need for institutional strategies and policies that promote the externalization and combination of knowledge, as well as the integration of communities of practice into formal KM systems. The study also discusses research limitations, such as the small sample size and the focus on federal universities, and proposes directions for future investigations.
