Abstract

The objective of this paper is to present a relationship between the concept of development and the social innovation construct. Therefore, an exploratory study of the trajectory of ideas about development was carried out. It was based on two premises: (i) innovation is a correlative idea to the development; (ii) understand the current conception of development. Thus, it is possible to find an alternative explanation for the interest in social innovation as a field of study. In light of what has been found, the following considerations are presented: (i) the social adjective accompanying the substantive innovation, as well as the adjectives that have been incorporated into the substantive development (social, human, sustainable, green, local) are didactic reinforcements, adopted to contribute to overcoming the idea that considers development as synonymous of economic growth and innovation as an aspect relative to market interest; (ii) it is necessary to move forward and avoid the polysemy of the adjectival concepts, which, despite the critical value, does not contribute to the interdisciplinary vision necessary for the advance of knowledge about development and innovation; (iii) the theories and practices developed in the field of knowledge management, by the evolution of overcoming disciplinary barriers and the lessons learned, can contribute to the interdisciplinary debates related to the booth themes in the current context.
