Abstract

E-mentoring has been taking a larger importance in organizations, especially given the widespread adoption of distance communication technologies. With growth, doubts arise about its effectiveness compared to that of face-to-face mentoring. This study aimed to synthesize the state of the art about the effectiveness of e-mentoring in the development of organizational leadership, based on an integrative review. The main finding is that e-mentoring is a process at least as effective as the face-to-face one and that this is due to some characteristics that circumvent existing barriers in traditional mentoring. E-mentoring also has barriers to its adoption, but they can be circumvented. The research frontier on e-mentoring is its use in the context of social media and new career paradigms, which value multiple weak connections instead of few strong ones.
