Abstract

In order to tackle the numerous problems related to Civil Engineering in Brazil, social entrepreneurs develop social innovation, generating social and economic value. A categorization scheme for the 44 social enterprises on civil engineering found in Brazil was created based on the Sustainable Development Goals. Empirical research consisting of 11 interviews with entrepreneurs, researchers and supporters of this ecosystem allowed us to identify 45 ‘elements’ of challenges or opportunities. These elements were integrated into six ‘dimensions’ that were articulated against previous findings in literature. From this discussion emerged a number of acting proposals for ecosystem supporters, governmental organizations, entrepreneurs and new fields for research such as Measurement of impact, Microcredit in civil engineering and Ecosystem maturity.
