Abstract

Within the scope of research on Assistive Technologies (A.T.), terminology is very important to enable a common dialogue and to provide practical guidance for professionals from several different areas that are currently involved in the development of A.T.s. However, through a bibliographic review that emphasized on the research made by the Technical Assistance Commitee (Comitê de Ajudas Técnicas - CAT) in 2009, some important conclusions regarding the lack of consensus on these terms were identified. Additionally, the terminology used at the moment does not seem to reflect properly the complexity of Assistive Technology, nor its social inclusion purposes. Furthermore, the meaning of the words selected to name such innovations for PCDs does not consider that words gain different meanings within diverse contexts and can condition projective and attitudinal design practices. In order to support the discussion proposed in this article, the methodological approach was both exploratory and descriptive concerning the terminology that represents A.T. The results launched in this article, in addition to following a very important research initiated by CAT in 2009, suggest the opening of new ways of perceiving the development of services and products for PCD.
