Abstract

The digital transformation has changed society's demands on organizations.This research aims
to investigate the challenges and opportunities for SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises) in
this new scenario.Firstly, we present the origin of the term digital transformation, and its
evolution, to improve discussions. Then, a systematic review was carried out, and the results
point some general concerns for any organization, such as the need to enrich and integrate
consumers experiences, a need for a data-driven culture,the co-creation of products/services
and a serious rethink of business models. For SMEs, barriers such as scarcity of resources,
knowledge gaps (specialized professionals) and strategic misalignment are pointed out. As
opportunities, the use of social media, open innovation and digital services are tools to tackle
financial limitations, on the condition that it is well supported by expert professionals.
