The study investigates emerging best practices in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in university design courses, focusing on a case study at the School of Industrial Design at the Academy of Art University. Given the rapid technological advancements and the increasing integration of AI into creative processes, the primary objective was to identify approaches that foster greater creative exploration and technological adaptation in higher education. The methodology involved field visits and participant observation in two design courses, analyzing the experimental use of generative AI tools. The results indicate that AI holds significant potential in the stages of ideation and prototyping, helping students detach from their initial ideas and encouraging the exploration of alternative solutions. It was also observed that resistance to adopting AI decreases as students recognize its ability to automate repetitive tasks. Despite these promising outcomes, challenges such as the learning curve and technological limitations persist, highlighting the need for guided experimentation and ongoing refinement. In conclusion, while the integration of AI into human creative processes in this case study shows positive results, there remains room for improvement, particularly regarding pedagogical adaptation and the development of specific ethical guidelines.
