Abstract

This paper discusses the importance of innovation and sustainable development when building a smart city through participatory processes. We focus on the "Loja Sustainable 2030" challenge, presented by the Ministry of Telecommunications (MINTEL) and the Technical Particular University of Loja (UTPL), in Ecuador. The challenge seeks to encourage diverse stakeholders, such as academia, public and private enterprises, entrepreneurs, students, and citizens, to come up with innovative ideas and proposals that contribute to the development of an intelligent and sustainable city. Our article emphasizes the importance of open innovation in creating innovative solutions and the need to involve students in designing ideas to improve their environment. Additionally, we highlight the relevance of cross-sector collaboration and knowledge management in achieving impactful transformation in urban areas.
