Software is fundamental in the technological revolution that affects society economically, socially and culturally. Software development is essentially dependent on knowledge and group work. Companies in this industry often have difficulties in leveraging knowledge generated in projects, because of pressures for speed and productivity, as well as use of methodologies that emphasize documentation very little. It is investigated the relationship between knowledge and memory in software companies as a subsidy to the implementation of knowledge management, verifying the successes and shortcomings in this respect. It is proposed a tripartite perspective of organizational memory, accumulating tacit and explicit knowledge, embedded in organizational history, its culture and work experience. The multiple case study was used as a research method in two software companies in cities of São Paulo state that are technological centers, Marília and Garça. As results, obtained with interviews, observation and analysis of corporate websites, the following are stressed: organizational culture influences employees' relationship with knowledge, and there are visible aspects that function as symbols of cultural values; there is a need to makke knowledge explicit with consistent documentation; historical aspects are effectively used to shape organizational image before society, thus, it is suggested to use them in endomarketing, motivating the commitment with organizational goals and knowledge management.
