This work aims to discuss the causes and consequences of Startle Effect on pilot’s performance during abnormal situations in order to understand how it manifests itself in aeronautical accidents. Afterwards, it will be addressed human resilience to the development of activities and decision-making. Aiming at the best union of the two themes, four case studies will be revisited with the objective of understanding the actions taken by the pilots and why the measures made sense to them in each of those situations. Accidents will be individually analyzed, observing where startle was present jointly with pillars of resilience. Finally, questions will be raised about the effectiveness of training in the face of real-life emergencies and how the industry can direct its focus to further raise its safety levels.
