Abstract

The widespread use of smartphones has made apps a common form of relationship between citizens and institutions, and their use in urban crowdsourcing (UCS) campaigns is frequent and diverse. Florianópolis (SC), a popular summer vacation destination among Latin Americans, has diversified its economy in the last decades and has become an innovation and technology hub in Brazil. In this article, the theoretical issues that permeate the development of UCS apps and affect citizens' adoption of such tools were discussed, through which ten urban crowdsourcing (CSU) apps available in the municipality were analyzed. Their urban imaginaries, design strategies, target audience, and data dissemination strategies were considered. The findings show a wide variety of UCS apps in that city, most of which originating from developers’ needs, not targeted at any specific audience, and deriving from both government and civil society initiatives.
