Abstract

Female leadership in the public sector is a growing topic, with gaps in understanding the challenges, leadership styles and factors that impact the rise of women leaders. This work reviews the state of the art on the subject, investigating challenges, leadership styles and impacts. The methodology includes a systematic search in the Scopus and Web of Science databases, with analysis of 20 articles published between 2019 and 2024. The thematic analysis addresses challenges, such as gender bias, lack of support and restricted opportunities for advancement. However, studies indicate that women leaders often adopt collaborative, transformational and democratic styles, promoting innovation, participation and effective crisis management. It is concluded that future research can deepen the understanding of these leadership styles, explore strategies to reduce challenges and enhance the effectiveness of female leadership.
